Peter Waller‑Flynn Shares Expert Insight on the Employment Rights Act on ‘Behind The Eyes’ Podcast

This month, we’re proud to spotlight a fantastic moment for PrivilegeHR. Our Group CEO, Peter Waller‑Flynn, joined Adam Ormrod on the latest episode of the Behind the Eyes podcast to break down one of the most significant legislative developments of the year: the newly introduced Employment Rights Act (ERA).
Peter brought his trademark clarity to the conversation, offering practical, real‑world guidance on what the ERA means for SMEs, optical practices, employees and locums. Drawing on his experience as a recognised HR expert – with previous features on the BBC and contributions to The Economist, he explored how these changes will shape everyday HR decisions, compliance responsibilities and workforce management.
Interestingly, this episode was the very first one recorded for the series, back in January. Yet the insights shared remain just as relevant today. Peter and Adam discussed everything from legislative shifts to the immediate steps business owners should be taking to stay compliant and protect their people.
Their conversation reflects the values we champion at PrivilegeHR: clear guidance, practical support and a genuine commitment to helping organisations navigate change with confidence.
A huge thank you to Adam for hosting such a thoughtful discussion. It’s always a pleasure to see Peter collaborate with professionals who share the same passion for getting things right for businesses and their teams.
For business owners, directors and HR professionals, this is an episode you won’t want to miss.
Why Every Employer Needs an Annual HR Health Check
As we move through the summer period, many organisations begin planning ahead for the second half of the year, making July the perfect time to take stock of your HR foundations. At PrivilegeHR, our HR Health Check remains one of the most valuable tools for employers who want clarity, compliance and confidence in their people practices.
The process begins with a Discovery Meeting, where our consultants take time to understand your structure, workforce, challenges and upcoming organisational changes. This isn’t a tick‑box exercise, it’s a chance to explore how your HR currently works and where improvements could make a meaningful difference.
From there, we complete a full documentation audit, reviewing contracts, handbooks, policies, recruitment processes, Right toWork checks, disciplinary procedures, absence management, GDPR compliance and more. Every area is assessed using our traffic‑light compliance system, giving you a clear visual snapshot of what’s working well and what needs attention.
The result is a detailed Risk Report, categorising findings into high, medium and low risk. Whether it’s outdated clauses, missing policies or opportunities to strengthen employee engagement, you’ll know exactly where your priorities lie.
Finally, we build a structured action plan with owners, deadlines and practical next steps, making compliance achievable rather than overwhelming.
For retained clients, this forms part of a full annual cycle including quarterly reviews, monthly legislation monitoring and an annual re‑audit. It’s a proactive approach that keeps organisations safe, prepared and ahead of change.

Staying Ahead of Change: How Our Monthly Legislation Monitoring Protects Your Business
Employment law continues to evolve, and 2026 has already brought significant updates across flexible working, family leave, minimum wage and workplace protections. For many employers, keeping up can feel like a full‑time job. That’s why PrivilegeHR’s Monthly Legislation Monitoring Process is such an important part of our retained service.
Each month, our consultants review trusted sources including GOV.UK, ACAS, CIPD, Employment Tribunal updates, ICO guidance, HSE notices and legal briefings. We track every change, from headline reforms to subtle updates that could impact your contracts, policies or payroll.
Every legislative change is assessed using our Impact Assessment Framework, answering key questions:
- Does this affect contracts?
- Does this require policy updates?
- Will managers need training?
- Does payroll need adjusting?
- Does this create legal risk?
Once assessed, changes are categorised as Critical, Significant or Advisory, ensuring you know exactly what requires immediate action and what simply needs monitoring.
Clients then receive our monthly HR Legal Update Bulletin, summarising:
- The change
- Effective date
- Risk level
- Required action
- Support available
This means you’re never left guessing. You know what’s changed, what it means for your organisation, and how we’ll help you implement it.
With employment law continuing to shift, this proactive monitoring gives employers peace of mind, and ensures your HR stays compliant all year round.

Turning Insight Into Action: How Our Structured Plans Drive Real HR Improvement
One of the most valued parts of the PrivilegeHR Health Check is the Action Plan, a clear, practical roadmap that turns audit findings into meaningful progress.
After completing your audit, documentation review and risk assessment, we translate everything into a structured plan with priorities, owners and deadlines. This ensures improvements don’t sit on a shelf, they become real, manageable actions.
A typical plan might include:
- High‑priority updates such as contract reviews or handbook changes
- Medium‑priority improvements like introducing a probation process or updating recruitment documentation
- Low‑priority enhancements such as employee engagement initiatives or best‑practice refinements
Every action is assigned to the right owner, HR, managers or leadership, with realistic timeframes that support steady, sustainable progress.
For retained clients, this plan feeds into a full annual cycle:
- Quarterly compliance reviews
- Monthly legislation monitoring
- Policy updates
- Manager briefings
- Employee communications
- Annual re‑audit
This rhythm ensures your organisation doesn’t just react to issues, it continually improves, strengthens and evolves.
The result? A safer, more compliant, more confident workplace where HR supports both operational needs and employee experience.

PrivilegeHR Cardiff: A Busy Month of Chamber Events
It’s been a fantastic month for our Cardiff team, with Sharron attending not one but two Chambers Wales events, each offering brilliant opportunities to connect with local businesses and hear from inspiring leaders.
This month, Sharron joined the Business City Connect event at Glamorgan Cricket Club in Sophia Gardens. Despite road closures, parking challenges and a very busy Cardiff calendar, the turnout was excellent, with plenty of chances to meet new faces and reconnect with familiar ones. A huge credit to the organisers for delivering such a well‑run morning.
Sharron also attended the Women’s Network event at Techniquest, kindly sponsored by The BUSY Group UK. The session featured insightful talks from fantastic women whom shared experiences that resonated strongly with attendees.
Two events, two great opportunities to strengthen relationships across the Cardiff business community. Thank you to everyone involved, we’re already looking forward to the next one!
