The Employment Rights Act 2025: Key Changes Coming into Force on 6th April 2026

The Employment Rights Act 2025 marks a pivotal shift in the UK’s employment landscape, ushering in a series of reforms aimed at strengthening worker protections, modernising workplace rights and promoting fairer working practices across all sectors.

With several key provisions coming into force on 6 April 2026, employers now face a critical period of preparation to ensure compliance with the new legal framework. These changes, spanning family leave, trade union recognition, whistleblowing protections and statutory sick pay, represent some of the most practical and immediate adjustments organisations will need to integrate into their policies, processes and people management approaches.

This represents one of the most significant overhauls of UK employment legislation in over a decade. Designed to support the Government’s Make Work Pay programme and improve working conditions across the labour market, the Act introduces a phased set of reforms running from December 2025 through 2027.

Among these, the changes scheduled to come into force on 6 April 2026 are some of the most consequential for employers, trade unions and workers alike. This article provides an overview of those April reforms, their purpose, and what organisations need to do to prepare.

What We Offer…

At PrivilegeHR, we help employers take the right practical action to manage their people confidently and stay compliant.

We explain what’s changed in plain English and what it means for your organisation and most importantly we support you and your managers to implement changes correctly.

We strengthen day-to-day people management in a practical and commercial way; designed to enable you to grow your business with confidence.
